Roots: Photography, Memory & The Moment Symposium

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

*Please use headphone for optimum listening experience* In this talk, David Utt, designer, developer and graduate of Parsons MFA Design and Technology Program, present an application and questions the belief that modern technology now allows us to record more of our life through photos and social media posts, our ability to remember the details of daily or special life events has not equally benefited from these advances creating a depreciation of having multiple references to the same event. Roots is a mobile photography application designed to support a mindful photography practice and to augment natural, qualitative memory creation processes. Roots…

Thesis Roots | Conclusions

By | Uncategorized

Sorry that it has been a while it has been a mix of a thesis, symposium, documentation, developments, pretty much a whirlwind of adventures but I wanted to let you know that my Thesis (for now) and my time as a graduate student in the MFA Design + Technology program is finally over. Roots for those that I have either talked to personally or are following along this blog (I will republish some of my previous in working thought) was and is an amazing project of which I am very proud of and plan to continue its development of the coming moths….

Iterations to Reinterpretations to the Here and Now

By | Uncategorized

Iterations and Reinterpretations of my project initially, I came to the conclusion that because we are creating so much data and memory online (from social media in particular) it must be a waste. This I believe is partially false, if we were to look at the greater history of memory looking all the way back to cavemen, Gilgamesh, Egyptians, Written Word, to photography today the amount of memory has always been growing. While this isn’t a new phenomenon it’s just as our tools to record have evolved our current tools have allowed this growth to be exponential vs. a linear…

Critiquing My Process – Answering the right questions

By | Uncategorized

What am I trying to solve with this thesis study/project? I believe that this key reason had been lost on me with the last prototype(s) of mine. I need to re-think what I am making…truly. Over the last few prototypes of my projects, I have focused very intently on the Interface and Output, where at the same time, I have lost what I am trying to solve for and fix in the first place. I am writing this as a reminder what I came here to do in the first place. To recall – My concept is this; We are publishing so…

Thesis – Paper Prototypes

By | Uncategorized

Building The Prototype Over the last week, I started a deeper dive into my digital mapper concept. When I talk to people on the floor and around the city I find that many people are really engaged with the overall idea seeing this a big problem when putting into context, starting to do the mental math in their heads of posting online. What my target audience and asked individuals though still have problems building/identifying the conceptual model of the experience that I have. Objective For this day of testing, I wanted to answer two particular questions that people appear to have when talking about…

Thesis – Looking ahead and focusing down

By | Uncategorized

Now with a semi-focused plan ahead, in terms of a clear objective and area to look at there are still some questions that need to be answered (by tonight). The largest I can think of beyond the WHY? is the conceptual and aesthetics point of view. Conceptual Project Theme In terms of conceptual Thinking, it ties quite closely to my scope where in that there is just TOO MANY MEMORIES out there and right now the way we are trying to archive it all is just wrong. We save the wrong things and have no emotional or mental ties to them. Think about…

Thesis Update – Too Much Stuff

By | Uncategorized

Yup, I have recently discovered that picking “memory” for my thesis concept is quite a daunting and fraught-filled path. Why you may ask, simply it is because of HOW HUGE IT IS! Seriously there is simply too many paths to take and the way too many directions one can follow. Based on last week how we were supposed to bring in an update and a series of images pertaining to our topic (new college) I was distressed why Anthony Deen pointed out how diverse I was: personal memories, locational memories, ancestral memories, and geographical memories. My scope through the bloody roof.   IN this…

Manus x Machina Exhibit Thoughts

By | Uncategorized
Not my first time visiting the MET but this weekend as part of thesis studies, I explored the new exhibit of Manus x Machina, a fashion gallery highlighting evolutions in fashion design and machining over the last century. Initially not that interested in the idea (as well I lets just say clothing wise I'm more utility over high fashion) though due to the class and seeing how technologies are being integrated in this field I suppose learning a bit more about the history and as Anthony Deen highlights "how it is presented" won't hurt to study. After spending about two hours exploring both...
